Topic: Calculation of column on the off-center acting force of compression
Objective: to acquire skills of theoretical calculation of column on the off-center acting force of compression
Task: A short stone column, whose cross- section is shown in task, is compressed by the force F, which is applied at the point B. For this column we have the next dates: specific weight of column material is 17 kN/m3, admissible tensile stress are 150 kPa, admissible stresses on compression are 1900 kPa, column has height of 4,5 m, a=0,6 m.
For the given column it is necessary:
1. Define the geometric characterizations of cross-section of colomn;
2. Determine the position of the neutral axis of the column;
3. Build the core of this cross-section;
4. Determine the allowable value of force F;
5. Build the diagrams of stresses for the upper and lower layer of the cross-section of the column.
