Topic: Working with words. Talking about first impressions
Aim: To develop students’ speaking skills in the context of first meetings and first impressions; to enrich vocabulary with words and expressions related to describing first impressions; to practice using language for describing appearance, character, and emotional reactions; to build confidence in interpersonal communication and dialogue.
Methods:
- Vocabulary exercises (introducing and practicing new words and expressions).
- Role plays (simulating first meeting situations and sharing impressions).
- Pair and group work (exchanging opinions and comparing impressions).
- Listening and video activities (dialogues and short situational clips).
- Class discussion (factors influencing first impressions).
Procedure:
Task 1. Read a short article about first impressions and be ready with the assignments 1, 2, 3 (page 6).
Task 2. Complete questions 1-8 with the correct verbs from the list. Check your answers by finding the words in bold in the article (Ex. 4, page 7).
Task 3. Listen to Zhifu Li (Audio 1.1), talking about adapting websites to local needs and answer the questions (Ex. 6, page 7).
Task 4. Do assignments 7 and 8 on page 7.
Task 5. Go to Practice File 1 and Do Working with words tasks (1, 2).
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
