Practical class № 2. Listening. Business Communication. Arranging a meeting
Aims: To develop students’ listening skills in the context of business communication; to practice understanding authentic conversations related to arranging and scheduling meetings; to enrich vocabulary and expressions commonly used in professional settings when setting up meetings; to improve students’ ability to participate in business dialogues with confidence and accuracy.
Methods:
- Listening exercises (dialogues and recordings about scheduling meetings).
- Vocabulary activities (key business terms and phrases for arranging appointments).
- Role plays (simulating phone calls and email conversations about meetings).
- Pair and group work (exchanging information and negotiating meeting details).
- Class discussion (factors that make communication effective and polite in business settings).
Procedure:
Task 1. Read the email from Ivan Formanek and answer the questions (Ex. 2, p. 8).
Task 2. Listen to Audio 1.2 and be ready with the assignments 3, 4, p. 8.
Task 3. Listen to Audio File 1.3 and complete the tasks 5 and 6 on p. 9.
Task 4. Go to Practice File 1 and Do Business Communication tasks (1, 2).
Task 5. Be ready with the Audio File 1.4 and do tasks 2, 3, 4, p. 9.
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
