Topic: Business communication: encouraging conversation. Practically speaking: ending and leaving a conversation
Aim: to develop students’ speaking and listening skills in business communication by practicing how to start, maintain, and end conversations politely. Students will learn strategies for encouraging small talk and leaving a conversation appropriately.
Methodical recommendations:
- Encourage students to participate in role-plays and pair work to practice realistic business conversations.
- Pre-teach useful phrases and vocabulary for starting, maintaining, and ending conversations.
- Focus on politeness, tone, and body language, not just words.
- Use listening exercises to model natural conversation and intonation.
- Provide feedback and correction on grammar, pronunciation, and appropriateness of phrases.
Procedure:
1.When you meet someone for the first time, how do you encourage conversation? What kinds of topics normally motivate other people to make conversation?
2. Read the tips and decide which five are the most useful (Ex 2, p. 14).
3. Be ready with the assignments 3, 4, 5 on page 14, 15.

4. When you end and leave a conversation, it is polite to give a reason and to promise future contact. Match the two parts of the phrases 1-5 to a-e. Then listen and check.

5. Choose one of the situation from the assignment 2, have one or two minutes of small talk, then end the conversation appropriately (Ex. 2, p. 15).
Materials required for сompleting the tasks
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
