Topic: Listening: Diagnosing a fault. Skills: Giving advice on technical problems

Aim: Students will listen to the dialogue and complete forms; give advice on computing problems; will be able to use ways of diagnosing faults.

Methods:

play the recording without pausing and do after-listening task;
study Language Work box and master skills in practice;
read the article and look through the table to complete the assignments.

Procedure:

Task 1. What are the most common computing problems for you and how do you get help with these problems? Use this form to answer the following question.

Monitor problems

Computer hangs
Printer problems
Computer crashes

Task 2. Study the form used by computing support staff in a help centre to record problems reported by phone (p. 117). Listen to the recording of a computing support officer, David, advising a user. Complete the form to record the main details of the problem.

Task 3. Study the following extract from the reporting (p. 118 Language work) then study steps to take before you phone for technical support. Rewrite each one using the clue given (Ex. 5, p. 118).

Task 4. Diagnose these faults and provide advice on each problem (Ex. 6, p. 119).

Task 5. Read the text and table (p. 122, 123) and find the answers to the questions (Ex. A, p. 122).

Task 6. Match the terms in Table A with the statements in Table B (p. 122, 123).

Task 7. Mark the following statements as True or False (Ex. 2, p. 123).

Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.

Assessment criteria: 5 points

5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.

4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.

3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.

2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.

1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
