Topic: TripAside
Aim: To expand students’ airport-related vocabulary , to practice using "be going to" for expressing future plans and making predictions , and to improve pronunciation.
Methods:
- Contextual Vocabulary Completion: Students complete a narrative about a trip to New York to practice identifying airport-specific terms such as "check-in," "baggage reclaim," and "customs".
- Phonetic Analysis and Drills: Categorizing words based on the sound of the letter "g" (e.g., hard /g/ as in "guess" vs. soft /dʒ/ as in "jazz") followed by listening and repetition tasks.
- Vocabulary Matching: Pairing airport-related nouns to form common compound phrases like "passport control," "security check," and "gate number".
- Logical Grammar Matching: Linking situational prompts to appropriate predictions or plans using "be going to".
- Controlled Grammar Practice: Completing sentences with "be going to" using a specific list of verbs and contractions to solidify sentence structure.
- Personalization Task: Encouraging students to write about their own actual plans for today, tomorrow, and next week to apply the target grammar to their own lives.
Procedure:
Task 1. Do the Vocabulary assignments (a, b, c).
Task 2. Practise the pronunciation. (a, b, c, d).
Task 3. Be ready with the Grammar tasks (a, b, c, d).
Materials required for completing the tasks
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
