Topic: Word game
Aim: To teach and practice the use of defining relative clauses (who, which, where), to develop paraphrasing skills for explaining unknown words using descriptive phrases, and to identify the pronunciation impact of the "silent e" on vowel sounds.
Methods:
- Guided Grammar Practice: Completing matching exercises and selection tasks to correctly use relative pronouns (who, which, where) in context.
- Sentence Construction and Personalization: Drafting original sentences about personal preferences and habits using defining relative clauses.
- Paraphrasing Drills: Learning and applying specific descriptive formulas such as "It's a kind of...," "It’s the opposite of...," and "It’s someone who..." to define various objects, people, and places.
- Interactive Word Puzzles: Solving crosswords and creating original clues using relative clauses and paraphrasing to strengthen vocabulary retention.
- Phonetic Analysis and Listening: Comparing word pairs (e.g., hat vs. hate, bit vs. bite) to distinguish how a "silent e" changes vowel sounds, followed by repetition tasks .
Procedure:
Task 1. Be ready with the Grammar tasks (a, b, c, d, e).
Task 2. Do the Vocabulary assignments (a, b, c).
Task 3. Practise the pronunciation. (a, b).
Materials required for completing the tasks
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
