Topic: Restaurant problems
Aim: To develop students' practical communication skills for dining in a restaurant by teaching essential service vocabulary, practising the functional language required to order food and handle service errors, and introducing social English phrases for making suggestions and discussing plans.
Methods:
- Vocabulary completion tasks: Students identify and complete key restaurant-related terms such as "menu," "main course," "waiter," "bill," and "tip" to establish foundational dining vocabulary.
- Dialogue sequencing exercise: Reordering a scrambled conversation between a waiter and a customer to understand the logical flow of a restaurant interaction, from ordering starters to addressing a cooking mistake.
- Problem-solving analysis: Practising polite ways to point out a mistake with an order and understanding a waiter's appropriate professional response.
- Social English application: Completing short dialogues using common conversational phrases like "any suggestions," "be great," "tell me," and "time to go" to improve fluency in casual social contexts.
Procedure:
Task 1. Do the Vocabulary assignment.
Task 2. Order the conversation.
Task 3. Practise social English.
Materials required for completing the tasks
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
