Topic: In your basket
Aim: To expand students' shopping vocabulary for both online and physical stores, to practice distinguishing between the Present Perfect and Past Simple when discussing life experiences, and to improve pronunciation by discriminating between the sounds of the letters "c" and "ch".
Methods:
- Vocabulary building through puzzles: Completing a crossword and a narrative text to master essential shopping terms such as "account," "auction," "checkout," and "delivery".
- Contextual word application: Using a list of specific nouns (e.g., "receipt," "sales," "till") to complete sentences related to retail transactions and discounts.
- Phonetic discrimination tasks: Identifying the "odd-one-out" in word sets to distinguish between the /k/ sound and the /tʃ/ sound.
- Controlled grammar practice: Writing sentences and questions in the Present Perfect to describe actions with unspecified times.
- Comparative grammar analysis: Completing dialogues that require choosing between the Present Perfect for general experiences and the Past Simple for specific events.
- Guided personal production: Drafting original questions and answers about personal shopping and travel habits to apply the target grammar to real-life situations.
Procedure:
Task 1. Do the Vocabulary assignments (a, b, c).
Task 2. Practise the pronunciation. (a, b).
Task 3. Be ready with the Grammar tasks (a, b, c, d, e).
Materials required for completing the tasks
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
