Practical class № 15. Great weekend
Topic: Great weekend
Aim: To help students distinguish between and correctly use adjectives ending in -ed and -ing, to master the use of indefinite pronouns (something, anything, nothing, etc.), and to improve pronunciation by identifying and practising the sounds /e/, /əu/, and /ʌ/.
Methods:
- Contextual Reading and Selection: Students read an advice text titled "How to Survive the Winter" to choose the correct adjective forms based on whether they describe feelings or things.
- Sentence Completion Drills: Practising the application of -ed and -ing adjectives in varied contexts, such as describing personal interests, news reports, or film experiences.
- Grammar Application Tasks: Completing sentences with indefinite pronouns like anybody, nowhere, and something to practice their use in positive, negative, and interrogative forms.
- Lexical Integration Exercise: Combining adjective and pronoun knowledge to complete a short narrative about holiday and social experiences.
- Personalized Response Task: Answering open-ended questions about personal experiences (e.g., when they were last bored) to apply the target grammar to their own lives.
- Phonetic Categorization and Listening: Sorting vocabulary words like sweater, clothes, and lunch into phonetic charts based on their vowel sounds, followed by listening and repetition drills.
Procedure:
Task 1. Do the Vocabulary assignments (a, b).
Task 2. Be ready with the Grammar tasks (a, b, c, d).
Task 3. Practise the pronunciation. (a, b).
Materials required for completing the tasks
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
