Course guidelines

Discipline aims:
- to consider some fixed theoretical concepts and implement them into practice gradually and successfully.
- to write samples of various formal and informal correspondence;
- to practise grammar items, punctuation, word building, sentence structure, word order, question forms, etc.;
- to speak monologically and dialogically on a suggested topic;
- to master different types of speech activity (communication skills in reading, listening, oral and written speech).
Guidelines: During lead-in students work in mini-groups and propose quick question-answer feedback. Students share information about the current status quo in a particular field by training the skill of prepared oral speech. To learn new words and word expressions a lecturer gets acquainted students with some pronunciation specifics and key words usage. Students are offered to make oral sentences with new vocabulary.
Reading comprehension: students read and translate the whole text focusing on its complexities, divide a text into some sense text items, compose sentences of their own with the key words and expressions. Text perception is checked by exercises that are performed individually in writing/orally.
Listening comprehension: students listen to an audioscript two times, make notes of key words and phrases, work out a paper version. Students discuss the subject proposed by the teacher, answering the specified questions both individually and collectively, develop the skill of both prepared and unprepared speaking, take part in making dialogues.
Form of presenting results on performed activities: oral tasks are checked by the teacher in class, written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria (practical class): 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.

Assessment criteria (self-study): 10 points
10 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class, the results of the completed tasks are submitted on time.
9 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class, the results of the completed tasks are submitted on time.
8 points – 70 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class, the results of the completed tasks are submitted on time.
7 points – 60 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class, the results of the completed tasks are submitted on time.
6 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, the results of the completed tasks are submitted on time.
5 points – 60 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, the results of the completed tasks are submitted with delay.
4 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, the results of the completed tasks are submitted with delay.
3 points – 40 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, the results of the completed tasks are submitted with delay.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 70 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, the results of the completed tasks are submitted with delay.
1 point – 20 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 80 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, the results of the completed tasks are submitted with delay.

Consultations and the missed topics drill: in accordance with the consultations schedule of the English Philology Department lecturers, twice a week.
