Welcome Aboard: Navigating the Airport

Phase 1: Departure (Leaving on a Journey)

Before you can fly, you have to navigate the terminal. Here is the typical flow:

  • The Departures Board: Upon arrival, check this board for your flight number (e.g., BA735), departure time, and destination.
  • The Check-in Desk: An agent will check your ticket and weigh your luggage.
    • Note: If your bags weigh more than the limit (e.g., 20kg), you must pay excess baggage fees.
  • Luggage Types:
    • Suitcase/Luggage: Larger items checked into the plane's hold.
    • Hand Luggage: Small bags you carry onto the aircraft.
    • Trolley: Used to transport heavy bags through the terminal.
  • Security & Beyond: * You receive a boarding card, which is the paper required to get on the plane.
    • Passport Control: An official carefully checks your passport.
    • Departure Lounge: A waiting area where you can visit the duty-free shop to buy tax-free items like perfume or cigarettes.

Phase 2: Boarding & Take-off 🛫

  • The Gate: Shortly before take-off, go to your designated gate (e.g., Gate 3) to board (get on) the plane.
  • On the Aircraft:
    • Store hand luggage in the overhead locker (the cupboard above your seat).
    • Fasten your seat belt as instructed by the cabin crew.
  • Leaving the Ground: If there are no delays (unexpected waits), the plane moves to the runway and takes off.

Phase 3: Arrival (Reaching your Destination)

  • Landing: When the plane lands (arrives on the ground), the cabin crew will make an announcement with instructions.
  • Exiting: Passengers get off the plane and walk through the terminal building.
  • Retrieving Belongings:
    • Baggage Reclaim: The area where you collect your checked suitcases.
    • Customs: The final checkpoint where luggage may be checked for illegal items before you leave the airport.
