Laboratory class № 12. Tips for making a perfect presentation in English
Topic: Reading: Tips for making presentations
Aim: Students look at some advice for making presentations in English, study useful word and phrases for presentation introduction, main body and ending.
Methods:
- read the text and do the tasks that follow;
- write down the key words and phrases that help you to make your own presentation.
Procedure:
Task C. Match the advice of presenters (1-10) to the comments a)-j) that members of the audience make to each other after attending a particular presentation. What is your opinion?
1. Tell a joke at the beginning to relax the atmosphere.
2. Speak more slowly than you normally do.
3. Smile a lot.
4. Involve the audience.
5. Invite questions during the presentation.
6. Always keep to your plan.
7. Move around during your presentation.
8. Use gestures to emphasize important points.
9. Read out your presentation from a script.
10. Stand up when giving your presentation.
a) He shouldn't have read aloud like that – it’s so monotonous.
b) He shouldn't try to be a stand-up comic.
c) He was speaking to us as if we were idiots - couldn't be speak at normal speed?
d) People asked so many questions he didn't have time to finish. And some of the questions were irrelevant!
e) It doesn't look natural when Anglo-Saxons start using their hands a lot - they should leave that to the Latins.
f) He was looking very happy all the time, but I couldn't understand why.
g) He would have been more comfortable sitting down.
h) I got nervous when he asked people to come on to the stage - I thought he was going to ask me!
i) He stuck to his plan even when it was clear that the audience already knew 90 percent of what he was saying – it was so boring!
j) He was prowling around on stage like a wild animal.
Task D. Create different ways to open a presentation, using the verbs in the box (Assignment 51.4).
Task E. Complete the presentation extract with the words in the box (Assignment 52.2).
Task F. Complete the extract from the close of a presentation with the words in the box. It is an internal presentation about departmental reorganisation (Assignment 53.1).
Form of presenting results on performed activities: written tasks are delivered by electronic files for further assessment.
Assessment criteria: 5 points
5 points – all written tasks are performed correctly, minor spelling mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
4 points – 80 – 90 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 20 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
3 points – 50 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 30 – 40 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
2 points – 30 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 50 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
1 point – 10 percent of written tasks are performed correctly, 60 percent of spelling and grammar mistakes are allowed, a student actively fulfills tasks in the class.
